Potentially the most lethal disease caused by asbestos is a cancer, mesothelioma. When you are exposed to a dust, the asbestos fibers migrate to the pleura, the covering of the lungs or stomach cavity, and can cause a potentially fatal cancer called mesothelioma. In humans, the only recognized cause of mesothelioma cancer is asbestos. In 80% to 88% of all mesothelioma cancers there is a history of asbestos exposure. Because mesothelioma cancer is such a devastating disease, the forms of treatment are very important. Treatment options include surgery, a removal procedure called an extra-pleural pleurectomy, photodynamic therapy, chemotherapy and radiation.
